Усиление в символистской практике индивидуального начала отнимал возможность любой претензии на выражение общих взглядов целого течения. Потому манифест Мореа- са нашел как сторонников (Г. Кан), так и противников. Во всяком случае, Рене Гиль, не удовлетворенный тем, как понимает символизм Мореас, основывает в октябре 1886 г. журнал «Декаданс» и помещает в его первом номере текст-манифест «Наша школа», излагая собственное понимание символистской программы творчества «Заставить доминировать Мечту посредством Символа... - вот воля этой Школы». В целом литературная теория символистов с 1886 по 1891 г. «представляла собой серию контрударов или «реплик», так что форма манифеста, в которую был облечен символизм с самого начала, оставила свой отпечаток на всем внутреннем развитии этой школы» [17, с. 182].
Индивидуализация литературной поэтики в символизме, сочетаясь со стремлением найти единомышленников, а также с претензией на утверждение неких объективных закономерностей искусства, его истинного содержания и функции, не помешала жанру манифеста оставаться востребованным и в начале ХХ в., что проявилось, в частности, в появлении «Манифеста футуризма» (1909) Маринетти и двух «Манифестов сюрреализма» (1924; 1929-1930) А. Бретона.
