Необходимы высокоинтегрированные исследования, включающие концентрационный, скоростной, филогенетический, биомаркерный, микроскопический и изотопный анализы, которые могут одновременно демонстрировать метаболическую активность, численность популяции, биоэнергетику и пути движения углерода для данной среды обитания. Эти исследования могут быть использованы для проверки различных гипотез окисления метана, а применение экзогенных изотопных индикаторов может быть полезно для отслеживания непосредственной судьбы метана в образцах (т.е. в липидах, ацетатах или других промежуточных веществах).
