1.   the main body of a ship or other vessel, including the bottom, sides, and deck but not the masts, superstructure, rigging, engines, and other fittings[OxD]

2.       the part of a ship or boat that floats on the water. The front part is called the bow and the back part is called the stern[MacD]

.         the frame or body of a ship or boat exclusive of masts, yards, sails, and rigging [Mer-WebD]

·    I plied my fire all night long, till daybreak: and when it was broad day, and the air cleared up, I saw something at a great distance at sea, full east of the island, whether a sail or a hull I could not distinguish - no, not with my glass: the distance was so great, and the weather still something hazy also; at least, it was so out at sea [D. Defoe ‘Robinson Crusoe’: 296].

Port of Hull -

·    I was born in the year 1632, in the city of York, of a good family, though not of that country, my father being a foreigner of Bremen, who settled first at Hull [D. Defoe ‘Robinson Crusoe’: 2].

Идиома to take the wind out of (someone's) sails (1888) «внезапно остановить кого-либо неожиданными действиями; заставить кого-то чувствовать себя неуютно», как меж двумя ветрами [Douglas].

1.   a piece of material extended on a mast to catch the wind and propel a boat or ship or other vessel [OxD]

2.       a large piece of strong cloth fixed to a tall pole on a boat, used for catching wind to move the boat across water [MacD]

.         an extent of fabric (as canvas) by means of which wind is used to propel a ship through water [Mer-WebD]

·    In a word, I brought away all the sails, first and last; only that I was fain to cut them in pieces, and bring as much at a time as I could, for they were no more useful to be sails, but as mere canvas only [D. Defoe ‘Robinson Crusoe’: 87-88].

·        Seven years ago,” said the girl, “they came here in a ship whose sails were rags and timbers ready to fall apart [C. L. ‘The Voyage of the ‘Dawn Treader’’: ch.13].

·    Well, on, my coronation day, with Aslan's approval, I swore an oath that, if once I established peace in Narnia, I would sail east myself for a year and a day to find my father's friends or to learn of their deaths and avenge them if I could [C. L. ‘The Voyage of the ‘Dawn Treader’’: ch.2].

·        She sailed with what we call a shoulder-of-mutton sail; and the boom jibed over the top of the cabin, which lay very snug and low, and had in it room for him to lie, with a slave or two, and a table to eat on, with some small lockers to put in some bottles of such liquor as he thought fit to drink; and his bread, rice, and coffee [D. Defoe ‘Robinson Crusoe’: 30].

·    Captain/Master -

·        Officers/Mates -

·        Boatswain - боцман

·        Lookout - наблюдатель, дозорный

·        Helmsman - рулевой, кормчий

·        Cook -

Granny(‘s) knot, smoke screen

·        White phosphorus is used as a smoke screen for US tank lands on a marine position, forcing soldiers to scatter [FairFax Media ‘Win for photography under fire’].

·        Men of the 7th Marines wait until the exploding white phosphorous shells throw up a thick-enough smoke screen to enable them to advance in their drive towards Shuri. The smoke often concealed the relentlessly attacking troops [ Marines in World War II Commemorative Series ‘The Final Campaign: Marines in the Victory on Okinawa’].

Ее можно проиллюстрировать такими единицами как: flotsam and jetsam, head and head

·        He was alone with the dead men of a dead civilisation. What though the outer city reeked of the garish nineteenth century! In all this chamber there was scarce an article, from the shrivelled ear of wheat to the pigment-box of the painter, which had not held its own against four thousand years. Here was the flotsam and jetsam washed up by the great ocean of time from that far-off empire [A. C. Doyle ‘The Ring Of Thoth’].

·        The border was ready to rise. One Yankee, with a hundred I.W.W. men, waited the word to cross over the border and begin the conquest of Lower California. But he needed guns. And clear across to the Atlantic, the Junta in touch with them all and all of them needing guns, mere adventurers, soldiers of fortune, bandits, disgruntled American union men, socialists, anarchists, rough-necks, Mexican exiles, peons escaped from bondage, whipped miners from the bull-pens of Coeur d'Alene and Colorado who desired only the more vindictively to fight--all the flotsam and jetsam of wild spirits from the madly complicated modern world. And it was guns and ammunition, ammunition and guns--the unceasing and eternal cry [ J. London ‘The Mexican’ ch.2].

·    (d)+Adj+N - двухкомпонентная структура, представленная большим количеством единиц: a high-water mark, a leading light, a low-water mark, a sheet anchor

·        Despite the heavy clumsiness of her lines, the Aorai handled easily in the light breeze, and her captain ran her well in before he hove to just outside the suck of the surf. The atoll of Hikueru lay low on the water, a circle of pounded coral sand a hundred yards wide, twenty miles in circumference, and from three to five feet above high-water mark. On the bottom of the huge and glassy lagoon was much pearl shell, and from the deck of the schooner, across the slender ring of the atoll, the divers could be seen at work. But the lagoon had no entrance for even a trading schooner [J. London ‘The House Of Mapuhi’].

·        Her spirits were always at high-water mark, her tongue always going - singing, laughing, and plaguing everybody who would not do the same. A wild, wicked slip she was - but she had the bonniest eye, the sweetest smile, and lightest foot in the parish: and, after all, I believe she meant no harm; for when once she made you cry in good earnest, it seldom happened that she would not keep you company, and oblige you to be quiet that you might comfort her [ E. Bronte ‘Wuthering Heights’ ch.5 ].

·    (d)+N1+prep+(d)+N2 - трехкомпонентная структурная модель, которая представлена единицами: the flag of distress, the port of call (destination)

·        At dawn on the 13th the Carnatic entered the port of Yokohama. This is an important port of call in the Pacific, where all the mail-steamers, and those carrying travellers between North America, China, Japan, and the Oriental islands put in. It is situated in the bay of Yeddo, and at but a short distance from that second capital of the Japanese Empire, and the residence of the Tycoon, the civil Emperor, before the Mikado, the spiritual Emperor, absorbed his office in his own. The Carnatic anchored at the quay near the custom-house, in the midst of a crowd of ships bearing the flags of all nations [J. Verne ‘Around the World in 80 Days’ ch.22].

·        Ali North, 26, beat about 150 applicants to land the role with Suffolk Wildlife Trust. Although she started the job six months ago, most of the hedgehogs are only now waking up after winter hibernation. While they have been sleeping, she has been promoting "hedgehog highways" and recruiting "hedgehog champions". "The champions are people that want to make their whole street hedgehog-friendly," Ms North said. "They'll be the first port of call to basically persuade their neighbours to help" [BBC News ‘Ipswich's hedgehog officer meets her prickly charges’].

·    (d)+N1+prep+Q’s+N2 - четырехкомпонентная структурная модель, которая представлена the cut of smb’s jib

·    "Listen," she said, "I am certain this Ben Butcher is a smuggler and a bad man. I am a very good judge of seamen, remember, and I don't like the cut of this man's jib. I--" "Do you really think," I interrupted, "that it is safe for the Doctor to cross the Atlantic without any regular seamen on his ship?" [H. Lofting ‘The Voyages of Doctor Dolittle’ ch.5].

 The ringmaster general, Andrew Neil, has seen a few of these debates come and go over the years. So do they matter? "I think debates do matter, yes," he said. "People are tested, the audience get them under pressure, to see the cut of their jib it really helps to create an impression either positive or negative" [BBC News ‘London Mayoral Elections: Candidates get TV grilling’].

1.   V+(d)+N - двухкомпонентная структурная модель представленная такими словосочетаниями как: answer the helm, box the compass, clear the decks, know the ropes, lower the flag, slip the cable.

·    He was willing to learn all right, I'll say that much. But he was constitutionally unable to learn anything. He could no more box the compass than I could mix drinks like Roberts here. And as for steering, he gave me my first gray hairs [J. London ‘The Inevitable White Man’].

·        "It's very different obviously. You get better money for starters! You travel around a lot more. Quite a lot of the tournaments I played in on the amateur circuit were based in Britain whereas there's only a few that are on the

Ladies European Tour so we're travelling around a lot more. I'm just getting to know the ropes. Just figuring out where the best places are to stop and everything like that" [BBC News ‘Learning curve for Ganton's Bell’].
