Folk Tradition in V. Mayakovsky's Poem “About That”

The article is devoted to V. Mayakovsky's poem “About That”, which has been subjected to sharp criticism during the poet's life. Much attention is paid to the history of the study of folk tradition in the poet's works. The poem “About That” is analysed from the standpoint of historical poetics. The parallels are drawn with the Russian fairy tale and with the text of the poem “Pugachev” by S. Esenin. The complex interaction between the two systems, folklore and literature, that was of interested to folklorists (A. Gorelov, D. Medrish, I. Smirnov, A. Nalepin), reflected in Mayakovsky's poem. Analysis of the poem shows that the author does not simply follow the folk tradition, but engages in a “dialoguedebate”. The poet turned to archetypal models, to the cult of ancestor, expressed in the image of an animal totem. Comparison of the text of Mayakovsky's poem with the texts representing archaic fairy-tale tradition reveals “no household” plan of the poem. Much attention is paid to the archetypal construction and re-creation of ritual reality in the text. Applied aspect of research is in the ability to use the results in educational practice, namely in teaching subjects such as Russian folklore and Russian literature of XX century.
